Christian Workers Beaten up in Shri Ganganagar, Rajasthan

3/24/07 India (Persecution Update India) – Rev. P. Abraham, an independent Gospel worker along with Prof. Jacob Thomas, Railway College Kalyan, was beaten up while returning from a gospel meeting in Shri Ganganagar, Rajasthan on 23rd March 2007. Prof. Jacob Thomas is also the Winner of Presidential Award for computer literacy program in 2006.

While returning from the meeting a group of Hindu fundamentalist belonging to the RSS and BJP attacked the vehicle and pulled down Prof. Jacob Thomas and P. Abraham and very badly beat them. Both of them sustained serious injuries.

After some time the police came and they arrested Prof. Jacob Thomas and P. Abraham and put them under their custody at Jawahar Nagar Police station. The police also seized their laptop, Mobile phone and cash from Prof. Jacob Thomas and did not allow them to contact their relatives till 8pm in the night. After 8pm he could contact his wife and again they took back the mobile.

The attackers later came to the station and filed a police complaint charging them with forceful religious conversion.

Our coordinator has contacted the Superintendent of Police and state minority commission and as a result of the pressure from the state minority commission, the Superintendent of Police took personal interest and provided medical assistance. Our coordinator is on his way to the location to provide necessary legal and medical assistance.
