Military spokesman Bartolome Bacarro said Jainal Antel Sali Jr., alias Abu Soleiman, who was wanted by the United States government with a 5 million U.S. dollar bounty for killing two Americans, is confirmed dead.
The death of Sali was confirmed by a witness who identified the body recovered after Tuesday’s encounter with Army troops in Talipao, Sulu, some 900 kilometers south of Manila, he said.
The body of the slain rebel was brought to a military headquarters of Sulu, he said.
Sali, a self-proclaimed Abu Sayyaf spokesman, was implicated in the kidnapping and killing of an American tourist in 2001 and an American Christian missionary in 2002.
Filipino authorities filed charges against Sali and two other leaders for their involvement in a series of bombings in October 2002 in Zamboanga City, southwest Philippines, that killed at least a dozen Filipino civilians, an American soldier and the wounding of more than 200 others.
