False Reports of Conversion Trigger Violence in Jaunpur District, UP
Evangelical Fellowship of India (10/10/06) False reports of the conversion of about 300 villagers to Christianity on October 3rd from Belhara, a village in Jaunpur district of Uttar Pradesh, triggered violence in the district.
Sources have told EFI NEWS that the reports have resulted in Christians facing severe hardship in this area. The police too seem to be working hand in glove with fundamentalist groups and have been regularly detaining local Christians at the police stations, pressurizing them to return to Hinduism.
The reports started after a meeting of about 300 people held at the home of Sanjay Singh, a convert to Christianity. The prayer meeting was attended by both Christians and non-Christians on a voluntary basis. Singhs neighbor reported the meeting to the police and the incidence gained momentum from there onward.
Hindu fundamentalist groups like the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) as well as the local press are making matters worse for Christians.
Let us intercede for the Christians in Jaunpur district, especially for Sanjay Singh and evangelist Rajendra Chauhan as he leads regular prayer meetings on Saturdays and Sundays.
