(ICC source) – Today, May 6th, the ‘Prohibition of forced Conversions’ Bill (original draft) was presented before the Parliament for its 2nd Reading . According to procedure, the Bill was approved by Parliament to be referred to a Standing Committee.
The Sri Lanka Parliamentary procedure allows Parliament to approve a Bill in its entirety or approve only selected clauses of a Bill for the Bill to be referred to a Committee. It is still unclear as to which clauses in the Bill were approved by the Parliament.
At the Committee stage, the Bill may be amended before being taken up for the final
reading and voting. Accordingly, the Bill may require a 2/3 majority or a simple majority (1 vote) to be made law.
