Expressing concern over the developments, the participants urged the Okram Ibobi Singh government to protect the minority Christian population, particularly among the Meiteis and Rongmeis. Executive secretary of Meitei Baptist Association, Rev. Devendra Singh, said local residents had not allowed the burial of a Meitei pastor’s father at Phumlou in Imphal West last year as per Christian rites. Another church leader alleged that local residents, mostly Hindus, had dismantled a church in Thoubal district and warned the Christians of the area against reconstructing it.
