State Dept. Religious Freedom Report:
2008
2007
Religious Atmosphere:
- Some 60% of the population is presently Christian particularly in the north where the majority belong to the Ethiopian Orthodox Union Church which is related to the Coptic Church. The southern provinces are mostly Muslim. 33% of Ethiopians overall are Muslim. There are also animists and Jews.
Government:
- The constitution provides for the freedom of religion, including the right of conversion and the freedom of worship. But Christians who live in Muslim dominated parts of the country face discrimination and violence.
Year 2009 Update:
July 03, 2009 Ethiopian police shot and killed two Christians who were helping to build a Church at a site which is also claimed by Muslims.
Feb 2, 2009 Ethiopian officials brought criminal charges against members of an Islamic extremist group. The group is responsible for several acts of violence, including killing of Christians and destruction of churches.
Suggested Actions You Might Take:
- Pray for the Christians of Ethiopia that they may continue to be protected from harm and that the Christian message may be heard and received by all.
- Please pray for God to give strength and courage for the persecuted Christians who live in Muslim dominated parts of Ethiopia.
- Please keep us informed of any replies or results you may receive! Contact ICC by email at icc@persecution.org.
