Vietnam Officials Confiscate Home of Evangelist

Vietnam officials in Lao Cai have confiscated the land and home of Sua Ying Siong in an attempt to stop the huge number of conversions to Christianity in his district and surrounding region. Siong, a former opium addict who was freed from his addiction shortly after his decision to abandon his animist beliefs and follow Christ, has inspired more than 200 families to do the same. His success as an evangelist has been attributed to his joy at his liberation.

Another Beijing House Church was raided Thursday evening when two officers broke in on a prayer service for the victims of the Sichuan earthquake and for the Beijing Olympics. Fortunately, a China constitutional law scholar was present and convinced the officials to leave after informing them of the Christians' right to worship under the Chinese constitution and international law.

A statement by evangelist Franklin Graham during his visit to China has raised questions about his commitment to the presentation of the gospel when it comes into conflict with political pressure. Graham told reporters that Christians should not evangelize during the Olympic games because it is against the law in China. One wonders, since it is always illegal to evangelize in China, if the evangelist believes, then, that China should not be given the chance to hear the gospel, at all?

In line with a disturbing trend leading up to the Olympics in Beijing, Chinese police and officials raided the Shouwang House Church in Beijing and ordered the church to stop what they called an "illegal gathering." Prior to this raid, on May 9, Pastor Dong Yutao, who is a major house church leader in one of the largest house churches in Beijing, was arrested on his way to collect a shipment of Bibles.
