Indonesia: A Family is Reunited (continued)

Adel and the baby conceived during captivity.

In horror Adel and her daughter, Tien, watched as the rest of their family members were murdered before their eyes. Even 8-year-old Anto was brutally killed. The following are excerpts from a letter written to Adel’s husband that describe what happened next:

From the time the jihad troops killed Anto and Mama they took me with them. First of all, they stripped me naked, what humiliation! At that moment I had to walk under spears and unsheathed machetes at my throat. They poked me in the stomach with their machete knives. Then they said they wanted to turn me into dried salted fish and then roast me. I only prayed to the Lord and wept. They mocked me and taunted me with their words. It was terrible. They threw a bomb at me, they shot at me with home made guns in the groin and in my body but the bullets just fell useless to the ground. I just prayed in my heart and wept and then they talked among themselves using the Galela language, saying they would rape me in turns, thinking I could not understand them.

Dear Methu, At that time if they hadn’t threatened to kill me, I would not have married. Even though there were riots, I never would have given you up. If they had just made verbal threats, I could have borne it, but alas they straight away chased me with pistols and knives and machetes.

My life had no peace or safety. I gave in. I had to marry a man whom I did not love because he protected me when the others were going to kill me. However, inside my heart I felt like committing suicide.

Methu, I know that everybody knows that I have become a traitor, both to you and even worse, to our faith. Nevertheless at this moment, even though I have been made a Muslim and married again, I know that this is only in this world.

This letter was secretly sent to Methu in December of 2000 after he tried to rescue his wife and was informed that Adel had become a Muslim and remarried. After reading Adel’s heartfelt letter, ICC’s Operation Rescue team offered to help Methu recover his wife and daughter. Six months after the letter was written Adel was able to escape on a commercial boat. However, Tien was not allowed to accompany her. Not knowing what was in store for her, the brave 10-year-old insisted that her mother go ahead without her. Upon realizing that Adel was not going to return, the jihad warriors starved Tien as punishment. However, praise the Lord for His goodness, during the last week of July, Tien, along with 16 other Christians, were rescued as a part of ICC’s Operation Rescue.

Methu, Adel, and Tien are now happily reunited, but they still face a major challenge. Despite the death of their beloved son, Anto, they are still a family of four. In January Adel gave birth to a daughter, Ayuni. Pray that Methu would accept Ayuni as his own daughter and that the Muslim father would not press for custody. According to Islamic law all children belong to their father and must become a member of his faith.

Pray that Ayuni will have the opportunity to know Christ. Remember also to pray for the more than 5,000 Christians still held hostage.
