Bomb Scare Reignites Christians Fear of Persecution in Mali

Friday, January 17th, 2014

Almost a year after the French military intervened in the conflict in Mali, Christians living in a city in northern Mali have been reminded why Mali was ranked 7th on the list of the world's worst persecutors of Christians. On January 12, Christians discovered a bomb placed outside the building they were using as their church. Although it isn't know if the church was the actual target of the bomb, these Christians who are returning to Mali's northern regions have been reminded of the threat of persecution they face one year ago. Please pray for these brave individuals seeking to bring Christianity back to northern Mali.

Christians in Mali Still Insecure After Rough 2013

This dramatic change developed when Islamic extremist took control of the northern regions of the country and threatened to take over the entire country. Until the French military intervened, many Christians feared that the entire country would be unsafe for Christianity. Although things have calmed down, Christians continue to suffer.

Persecuting Christians in Africa – How the Message Gets Out

Tuesday, October 22nd, 2013

Systematic persecution of Christians is increasing rapidly across sub-Saharan Africa. How do these groups broadcast their beheadings, bombings, and tortures?  And how is the call to violent jihad broadcast to other Muslims on the continent? Tech-savvy terrorists use the same US-made social media that American teens use to plan an outing: FaceBook, Twitter, and YouTube. The BBC explains:

Africa Desert Breeds Islamists, from Al Shabab to Boko Haram

Saturday, October 12th, 2013

The combination of ready access to weapons flowing from Arab Spring states in North Africa, and the fact that the Sahel zone is outside the reach of most of the region's military and policing capability, have allowed for the formation of a "petri-dish" for the breeding of Islamists. The lawlessness of the Sahel has allowed the groups operating from to zone to conduct operations against Christian and Western targets with near impunity. The effort of the Séléka in CAR is just one example, where the Islamists are attempting to form a Sharia state despite the population being composed mostly of Christians.

More than half the Christian population has fled Iraq since the outbreak of war in 2003 while a similar exodus is beginning in Egypt and is expected to occur in Syria’s near future.

Christians in Mali praise French Forces for pushing back Islamic Terrorists

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2013

In one year, Mali went from unranked on Open Door's list of the top fifty worst persecutors of Christians to number 7. The collapse of the government and the takeover of Islamic extremists is the reason for this drastic change. When the extremists took over, Christians living in northern Mali were driven south by increased persecution. As the Islamists pushed south, many Christians feared having to leave Mali to survive. Several weeks ago, France decided to intervene in the conflict and has since pushed back the extremists. Many Christians are praising the French for their recent military success.

What Will Become of the Middle East’s Christians?

Saturday, November 3rd, 2012

Like the Jewish people who fled Yemen and other Middle Eastern countries in the 1940s and early-50s, the plight of Christians from the region has now followed suit, Andrew Doran writes for FirstThings.com. “Across the Middle East, affiliated Islamist movements have undertaken the systematic eradication of religious minorities, especially Christians. From Mali to Egypt, and from Syria and Iraq to Pakistan, millions of Christians find themselves threatened daily with humiliation, extortion, displacement, and murder,” he says.
