Persecuted Christians in MexicoEvery year dozens of Christians in Mexico are attacked, evicted, threatened, and discriminated against for their beliefs. That’s right, Mexico. Last May in the rural town of San Jose de Axuxco, in Puebla State, the members of a small Baptist church had their crops devastated after the town’s authorities cut off the water supply, throwing many of the church members into severe financial difficulties. In August, the town authorities decided to cut off their drinking water as well. The only “crime” the church members had committed was refusing to contribute to a local religious festival they didn’t believe in. Then, just a few months ago in the village of San Rafael de Tlanalapan, also in Puebla State, 70 Christians were driven in terror out of their homes after much of the village threatened to lynch and crucify them. The local Christians’ plans to hold a few days of meetings in the village had upset some of the other villagers who didn’t exactly agree with their beliefs. When death threats started flying, the mayor just stood by and watched, apparently afraid he would be evicted as well if he intervened. These events are just a couple of incidents in a wider issue, and they could be stopped if authorities at the state and federal levels stepped in. The Mexican government has long hesitated to get involved in anything that looks like a religious conflict, even if that means some Mexican citizens, like the Baptists of San Jose de Axuxco, are arbitrarily denied the basic rights guaranteed to them by the Mexican constitution. ICC strongly believes that all Christian’s, regardless of denomination or theology, should be allowed to worship without fear of persecution. Join us in petitioning the Mexican government to protect religious minorities wherever they are threatened, and to investigate the many crimes that remain unsolved. Follow the instructions below and have your signatures back to us by February 15th.
