Religious Atmosphere: 45% of this country's people are Protestant and 25.9% are Catholic. 6% are Muslim and 10% belong to traditional African religions.

No extremist groups have been cited for incidents of persecution in this country.

Government:

The constitution provides for the freedom of religion.
New churches must register with the government.

Recent Actions:

September 27, 2001 – Two churches were burnt to ashes in the town of Isiolo. Witnesses said Muslim youths were behind the attacks, leaving phrases carved in the remains of the church such as: “God is great,” and “We Condemn America.”
December 1, 2000 -- Four churches were destroyed by a group of Muslim youths. Previous clashes between Muslims and traders had resulted in the burning of a mosque. The Muslims then retaliated against local Christians by burning the churches. The Muslim group responsible is an extremist faction that has accused Kenya’s Muslim leaders of being too "moderate."
August 24, 2000 -- Father Anthony Kaiser, an American Roman Catholic priest, was murdered near Naivasha. Father Kaiser was killed by a gunshot wound in the head. It is believed that he was murdered because of his outspoken criticism of the government.
July 1999 – Fighting broke out between Muslims and Christians in Eldoret. Some individuals were reportedly stabbed before riot police showed up.

Summer 1998 – Muslims protested violently after an American Christian evangelist handed out tracts in front of a mosque and uttered statements blasphemous to the Islamic religion. Police had to intervene to prevent riots. The man was later deported.

1996 - The government criticized the National Council of Churches (NCCK) and the Catholic Church for calling for constitutional reform and fair elections. The government has accused the NCCK of subversive activities and inciting ethnic violence.

Prisoners: There is no evidence that prisoners are being held for their Christian beliefs at this time.
