Indian Pastor Beaten Up

11/8/07 INDIA (ANS) — A pastor in India’s Karnataka state was beaten up by Hindu radicals.


The incident occurred on Nov. 4.


Pastor Thankaraj, 50, has been in the ministering in Melukamanahalli village for 10 years and has a congregation of 20 members.


One of his members, a woman called Thulasiamma, was being persecuted by her family for her faith. After a prayer meeting, the pastor was escorting her back to her village as there was no public transportation available.


At about 1.00 pm, Thankaraj and Thulasiamma reached Hosalli Colony. On seeing the pastor, four Hindu radicals attacked the pastor, dragged him over thorns and kicked him on the head. He also received injuries to his chest and right hand.


The Hindu radicals held the pastor hostage until till 8.00 that night. After releasing him, the Hindus and filed a complaint with the police charging the pastor with prostitution.


On reaching his home, Thankaraj, was taken to a government hospital for treatment. He was admitted and is undergoing treatment.


Thankaraj’s attempt to file a complaint against his attackers was not accepted, as they had already filed one against him.
